Simply put, Kineticon is a system extension that replaces selected icons on your Macintosh desktop with icon animations. Included with Kineticon is "Kineticon Editor". Kineticon Editor allows you to create your own icon animations (or kines - pronounced as "kinnys" like in "skinnys") for use with Kineticon. Kineticon Editor is also used to choose which kines you want to have active (or enabled) and to enter your registration code for Kineticon.
System Requirements
You need a Macintosh computer with at least a 68020 processor. Faster processors (such as PowerPCs) are recommended. (Both PowerMacs and regular Macs are supported)
You need to be using System Software version 7.5 or higher (earlier systems above 7.0 may work, however, Kineticon has only been tested with Systems 7.5 through 8.1)
You need at least one monitor (Kineticon works on up to three monitors simultaneously).
Kineticon will only work on monitors set to 256 colors, thousands of colors, or millions of colors. It will NOT work in black and white, 4 colors or 16 colors (or any other mode you can think of). If you're using a screen that Kineticon doesn't like, it will ignore it (there won't be any animation on that screen).
Quick start
1. Launch "Kineticon Installer", choose the "easy" installation and install Kineticon.
2. After installation, launch Kineticon Editor.
3. In Kineticon Editor, enable the kines that you wish to have animating on your desktop.
For each enabled icon animation you would like to have appear on a file, folder or drive:
4. Copy the kine's "replacement" icon (to the right of it's enabling check-box) onto the clipboard by selecting the icon and using the "Copy" command in Kineticon Editor's "Edit" menu.
5. Paste the kine's icon onto a file, folder or drive in the Finder by selecting the file, folder or drive and using the "Get Info" command in the Finder's "File" menu. After the "Get Info" window for the file, folder or drive opens, select the icon in the upper-left corner of the window and choose "Paste" from the Finder's "Edit" menu. Close the "Get Info" window.
Finally...
6. Restart your Macintosh.
Cost/fee and how to Register
Kineticon is shareware. This means you are able to try the fully functioning Kineticon to decide whether you like it BEFORE you buy it. Also, you may freely distribute the unregistered version of Kineticon. If you decide to continue using this software after 14 days, you are obliged to register it by sending in the registration form and registration fee (or registering online at <http://order.kagi.com/?3U6>).
The registration fee is $10 US. Registrations are handled by Kagi, a payment processing service. You can register Kineticon online at <http://order.kagi.com/?3U6>, or use the enclosed “Register by mail/email/FAX” application to create a customized form, which you can then mail, e-mail or FAX to Kagi, whose address is given on the form. If you do not have the “Register by mail/email/FAX” application, you should download a fresh copy of the whole Kineticon package. It is vital that you use the registration form since payments sent without the appropriate form may be delayed or lost.
Once Kagi processes your payment they e-mail you the registration code in a message with the subject “Thanks for your payment”. (If you do not have an e-mail address, you must check the “Postcard Receipt” box.) If you do not receive this message, contact Kagi at <admin@kagi.com>.
Note: registering online gives you your registration code immediately.
Entering Your Registration Code (and getting rid of the annoying registration reminder)
Once you've received your registration code, open Kineticon Editor and choose "Enter Number" in the lower left hand corner of the reminder window. Another window will appear; type your name and your registration code exactly as it was sent to you. Hit "Ok" and you're done. If you make a mistake in entering your registration information, choose "Enter Number" again.
Once you've entered your registration code, Kineticon will no longer bug you about registering.
(If you need it, there's more information about registering at the end of this document)
Upgrade policy
Once you register any version of Kineticon you are automatically registered for ALL future versions of Kineticon; your registration code will work, for example, for versions 1.2, 1.9, 2.1, 4.8, etc. . You will never have to pay a fee for a Kineticon upgrade.

Version History
Changes in version 1.0.2 (from 1.0.1)
* Fixed a problem with RAM allocation which could cause Kineticon to report that it had run out of memory even with no Kines enabled and lots of free RAM available.
* Fixed a couple of bugs that could cause either Kineticon or other running applications to freeze or crash the computer.
Changes in version 1.0.1 (from 1.0)
* Fixed a seemingly random crashing bug which could occur when an animating icon was moved to a location that wasn't located on any screen.
* Fixed a rare crashing bug that could occur when a normal sized icon was drawn smaller than normal size.
* Modified the shareware reminder notice displayed when Kineticon finishes loading to a less obstructive floating window.
* Changed the way Kineticon allocates RAM to eliminate "heap errors" which required launching and quitting the editor (which didn't always work correctly anyway). As a consequence, it is now possible to enable and disable kines by moving them between the Kines folders manually and restarting. Using the editor is no longer necessary to enable kines.
* Modified the icon searching to be more cooperative. Kineticon now does most of its icon searching during interrupt time rather than during its normal cooperative time-slice.
* The registration entry dialog is now "more forgiving" and removes extra white-space that may inadvertantly be copied into the registration number text field.
* Modified the explosion kine so that it doesn't "bleed" through windows with black backgrounds.

More Complete Registration Information
BY FAR the easiest way to pay for Kineticon is with a credit card on the web. Go to <http://order.kagi.com/?3U6>, fill in the form with your credit card information and you'll receive your registration code right then and there.
Otherwise, paying for Kineticon is still fairly simple. Open the "Register by mail/email/FAX" program that accompanies Kineticon. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you desire. Save, Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to "Kagi". More specifics on the Register program to follow. Kagi handles my payment processing.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from "Register by mail/email/FAX" and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi FAX number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgement when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgement.
If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi
1442-A Walnut Street #392-3U6
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical.
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment. Kagi can not invoice your company, you need to act on my behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end. Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without the payment, the form cannot be processed. Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.
